Edwardian lady

Oil on canvas

a further example of the traditional craft combining lively brushwork with clarity of expression, rich colour and broad textures.

This is a small oil painting on board. Oil technique can appear modern in effect whilst using loose brush strokes despite a classical subject.
The likeness of the sitter is only really clear when skin tones are manipulated to capture all the nuance of expression.
Methods of using colour to enable this have been developed over many centuries. Many of these skills have been lost in recent years but are now becoming better appreciated.
