Nick Astbury
President of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists

Conté crayon on Ingres paper
15 x 20 inches

Conte crayon is a type of chalk, which can be used for broad sweeping strokes or can be sharpened to give very fine detail. The effect is similar to a pastel picture. The colours in these portrait drawings can be merged with great subtlety and the portrait commission undertaken from live sittings in the studio or from a photograph. Typically, formal institutional or academic commissions will take several sittings. They can be mounted and framed to give an impressive result. Bing Jones has been commissioned by a number of prestigious medical Royal Colleges to paint their presidents and other senior officers.
This was drawn at three live sittings at the Royal College of Ophthalmologists in a lovely Regency Room overlooking Regent’s Park where it now hangs.
